About this event
The 95-voice chorus, accompanied by a full orchestra, will perform three significant works from the classical period: Franz Josef Haydn’s esteemed oratorio, The Seasons. The concert opens with Beethoven's rarely performed gem, Calm Seas and Prosperous Voyage, and concludes with the uplifting final chorus of Mozart’s The Magic Flute.
This Tanglewood Masterworks Concert continues a multi-year series featuring some of the most celebrated works for chorus and orchestra within the classical repertoire.
Previous performances included masterpieces such as Mozart’s Requiem, Haydn’s The Creation, Beethoven’s Mass in C, Schubert’s Mass in G, Brahms’ German Requiem, and Bruckner’s Mass in f minor.
Central to this year's program is Haydn's The Seasons, his final major composition, known for its vivid depiction of nature and life’s cycles. This secular work, sung in German, vividly portrays scenes like the awakening of spring, summer thunderstorms, hunting expeditions, leisurely strolls, and festive drinking choruses.
Artistic Director Jack Brown shares, " The music…had their premiers in Vienna at the height of the classical period, and all three were written late in their lives at their full creative powers. Each work portrays the eventual triumph of truth and light over the stress and darkness of both personal and societal upheavals.”
Joining the Lyric Chorus & Orchestra, are three renowned soloists for Haydn's The Seasons. Soprano Maria Valdes returns following her acclaimed performance in the 2022 Mozart Requiem. Making their debut with Berkshire Lyric are Tenor Dann Coakwell and Bass Oren Gradus, both fresh from successful national tours.
